Pignut Hickory
Carya glabra
Size: 5-gallon
The Pignut Hickory is a hardy, slow-growing deciduous tree known for its tall, straight trunk and attractive, gray bark that develops shallow ridges as it matures. Typically reaching heights of 50-80 feet, this tree features glossy green, compound leaves that turn vibrant yellow in the fall. It produces small, pear-shaped nuts that are favored by wildlife, especially squirrels. Thriving in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soils, the Pignut Hickory is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it ideal for large landscapes, naturalized areas, or as a shade tree in rural settings.
